Flory, John S. (Bridgewater, Virginia) August 2014

Flory Jr., John S. Passed away on August 17, 2014, at Bridgewater Retirement Community. He was born September 5, 1910, in Bridgewater, VA, the son of Dr. John S. Flory and Vinnie Mikesell Flory. He graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1928 and Bridgewater College (VA) in 1932. He later attended Northwestern University School of Commerce in Chicago and was a member of Phi Sigma Phi Fraternity. John was united in marriage July 29, 1943 to the former Helen Humphreys, the mother of his only child, Lynn Riner of Harrisonburg, VA. Helen preceded him in death in 1958. He was united in marriage on June 9, 1963 to the former Helen Crumpacker Flora, who died in 2005. Mr. Flory was an accountant, employed in Chicago by Franklin MacVeigh & Co. for several years and by Illinois Zinc Company (later known as Hydrometals, Inc.) from 1939 to 1958, serving as Controller-Secretary the last few years. In 1958, he moved to his home town Bridgewater, VA, where he engaged in a plow manufacturing business for the next five years. During this period, he was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, served two terms as a member of Bridgewater Town Council and in 1960 served as President of Bridgewater’s 125th Anniversary Association. He was also a member and past President of Bridgewater Rotary Club. In 1963, he returned to Illinois and was employed as a Controller with Don L. Dise, Inc., developer of Boulder Hill community. In 1985, he co-founded Primus Realty Corp. and served as President and Broker until 1991. He stepped down when Primus Realty joined Coldwell Banker and continued to serve as Director until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, and the Rotary Club of Bridgewater. He is survived by daughter, Lynn Riner of Harrisonburg, VA; stepson, Rev. Dr. James Flora (Ann) of Bridgewater, VA; grandchildren, John Riner (Jennifer), Meg Oncken (Frank); step-grandchildren, Steven Flora (Pam), Mark Flora (Corina), Jonathan Flora, Michael Flora (Patricia), Leslie Boyle (Mark); great-grandchildren, Adeline, John Henry, Lucy and Julia Riner, Eric and Andrew Oncken; nine step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Margaret Rainholt; and niece, Pamela Flory, both of Bridgewater, VA; and devoted friend, Lois Stover of Bridgewater. The family especially wants to thank the Bridgewater Home third floor residential staff for their loving care of John. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous man who would do anything for his family. He was often described as a true southern gentleman. In business and in life, he lived by a high set of morals and values that were evident in all he did. He was a true patriarch and pillar for his family who often leaned on him for guidance. The celebration of life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 21 at Lantz Chapel, Bridgewater Retirement Community. The family will receive friends after the service. Burial will be private. Memorials may be given to Bridgewater Retirement Community Resident Care Endowment Fund, 302 N. Second Street, Bridgewater, Virginia 22812. Gardner, Bernita G.   (a descendent of the American “C-Line”)

Gardner,  Bernita G.  90, of Vermontville, Michigan died Friday, February 22, 2013. Mrs. Gardner was born December 21, 1922 in Barry County, MI the daughter of Oscar Flory and Neva (Troxel) Flory. She is survived by her son, Doug (Judy) Gardner; daughter-in-law, Debbie Gardner; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Glendon (Beulah) Flory of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord and their son, Dwight. Bernita adored her husband, and enjoyed their time in Leesburg, FL. In their retirement years together, she was a softball cheerleader for Gaylord”s games, and loved that the baseball field that they played on was named after him. She enjoyed country music and clogging, 4th of July family gatherings, and Father”s Day. She felt a great accomplishment with her kids, and cherished her grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM on Monday February 24, 2013 at Vermontville Congregational Church with Rev. Israel Young officiating, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM. (Information from Jerilee Herzel Hostetler):   “Just lost a 1st cousin last Fri Feb 22,  2013. Funeral services were held at Congregational Church Feb 25, 2013 for  Bernita FLORY Gardner of Vermontville MI.  Bernita was 90 yrs old on Dec 21, 2013.  She was the daughter of Oscar D Flory and Nevah Troxel . Bernita was married to Gaylord Gardner who passed away a few yrs ago. She had 2 sons, Douglas Gardner who survives & Dwight Gardner who passed away several years ago. There are numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren & one great great grandchild. Also surviving is a brother Glendon Flory of Ionia. Bernita was buried in Nashville MI by her husband Gaylord at Lakeside Cem.”

Helen Edwards Morrison, 92, formerly of Lynchburg passed away Friday, July 4, 2014 at the home of her daughter in Elizabethtown, KY where she has been residing for the past 4 years. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul Meade Morrison.
Born in Moran, KS, June 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ira Paul Edwards and Evelyn Louise Straub Edwards. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was a Spanish Professor, teaching at various local institutions. She retired from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg. She received her AB in Spanish from Florida State College for Women with honors and was selected as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and the Mortar Board Honor Society. She received her MA in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Paul M. Morrison, Jr. and his wife Laura of Lynchburg; Donald J. Morrison of Lynchburg; and John F. Morrison and his wife Betsy of Clinton, IA; three daughters, Mary Jane Morrison and her husband Leigh Harris of Arden, NC; Helen Morrison Long and her husband Jim of Elizabethtown, KY; and Julia Morrison Pruitt of Lancaster, OH; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, July 11, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush and Fr. Paul F. Doyle officiating. Private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel followed by a Rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
