Welcome to the Flora Flory Fleury Newsletter Archives

For the Years 1988 Through 2001
In November of 1988 Leslie Flory and Bill Flory published the first issue of the Flora Flory Fleury Newsletter. Leslie was the inspiration for this publication and Bill agreed to serve as the editor. From this modest beginning the newsletter grew to over one hundred and thirty (130) subscribers living in most of the fifty states, as well as several subscribers in other countries. When Bill made the decision to end the publication of the Newsletter with its October 2012 issue (Volume 25, Number 4) after a quarter century, he was asked to recount its early beginnings. Bill wrote: “In the 1960s I became interested in my father’s ancestral line. As I talked to him I found how little he knew about his father, who had died when he was seven years old. He thought he had come from Kansas (he was not sure). So as a result of that conversation my interest in family research began. Eventually (after a few years and following the writing of many, many letters) I made contact with Leslie Flory. In the course of subsequent communications Leslie suggested that “We need a family newsletter”. But he said “I am getting too old!” Come to think of it, I believe at that time he was younger than I am now). So I talked it over with Pat, my wife, and we decided we could take on the project.“It was decided to publish once each quarter. Leslie had quite a few contacts that he encouraged to subscribe. We determined the subscription would be just enough to cover postage. At that time I had access to a copier that allowed me free use. Shortly after the first issue we had a printer make up the front page. The names that are listed on the left hand margin were the various family spellings Leslie had run across in his research. The Crest was one he had made from Bunderman’s 1948 book depiction. The statement at the bottom of the page was suggested by one of the early subscribers and seemed to say it all. In the early years of publication I think the most subscribers we had numbered in the one hundred and fifty to one hundred and sixty range. The subscriptions never did really cover the cost of publication and mailing. The Newsletter was primarily a labor of love and Leslie made frequent contributions, both financial and historical.”The newsletters contain family trees, family histories, stories and anecdotes, reunion information and progress reports on various F/F/F research projects. Since many of us had usually only recently become active researchers in our family histories later in, say, the 1990s or early 2000’s, prior to the depositing of this first group of Archived Issues on the web much of the earlier information was unavailable to many. The 1988 to 2001 Uploading was done by Richard Gethmann on Ken Florey’s first Rootsweb F/F/F webpage in 2002. When it was suggested to Bill that the online archiving of initially the earlier issues (and later the entire collection of issues) would be a helpful tool for researchers, Bill immediately agreed that it would be.See the list of archived issues in the dropdown box above under “Newsletter Archives 1988 – 2001” and “Newsletter Archives 2002 to 2012”. In addition a partial listing appears in the right-hand box. A “Table of Contents” broken down for each issued appears below for the 1988 – 2001 Issues. A similar one appears in the Archives Section for the years 2002 to 2012. Click on the highlighted Volume Number and the link will take you to that particular issue. |
