Joseph Flury (born about) 1841, Swiss, 1880 in Massilon (Stark County, OH)
The 1880 US Federal Census of Massilon 4th Ward (Stark County, Ohio) contains the following record
FLURY Joseph (39), Blacksmith, 10 months unemployed during the census year, place of birth: Switzerland
FLURY Cathrine (32), Wife, Place of birth: Ohio, Place of birth of her parents “El. France” (some of the records below contain information like “Elses Fr.”, “Elsass Fr.” and “Elsass” which could mean Alsace, France)
FLURY Nellie (4), daugther, Place of birth: Ohio
Joseph FLURY was born in Switzerland abt 1841. Probably in 1875/76 he married his wife Cathrine (* abt 1848 in Ohio, as daugther of immigrants from the Alsace, France). In 1880 Joseph was mostly unemployed, so perhaps he and his family lived together with the next listed familiy of Ferdinand and Jospehine BINDLER, immigrants from the Alsace too.
A speculation (without any proof): Joseph could be
> Josef FLURI (* Oct 10, 1840 in Herbetswil, Solothurn, Switzerland) son of Urs FLURI and Barbara ALLEMANN and the younger brother of
– Jakob FLURI (* July 14, 1824), blacksmith and
– Niklaus Josef FLURI (* July 12, 1834), blacksmith
who both immigrated on the same ship in 1866 and lived relatively close to this Joseph:
– Niklaus lived 1870 also in Massilon City (Stark County, Ohio)
– Jakob lived 1870 in Dover an 1880 in the Olmsted Township (both Cuyahoga County, Ohio)

Jakob Fluri (Fleury) born july1824 immigrated in 1866 with wife Mary to Olmsted Falls village, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States> He was listed as being a blacksmith and the villages first sheriff. What is interesting is that Jakob Flury (1830-1872) lived less than an half hour from him.
Interesting as you say … if you want to post a detailed family line, that is always appreciated, Jerry.
Jakob Flury (1830-1872) immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio after arriving in New York in May 1857. His wife was Monika Oeschger (1827-1904), born in Alsace. Apparently, they may have stopped in the Buffalo-Erie area for a short while as their first son George was born on December 31, 1858 in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York. He was a meat butcher by trade. He had three sons George, John (1862), and William (1866). They lived on Japan Street and sold meat at the Pearl Street Market. After his death, Monika sold pickles at the market. Their three sons eventually opened the Flury Brothers Packing House until John died and the business appears to have dissolved.
I just found on the ship passenger list for Troy that along with Jacob Flury (records showing Flurz) age 26 and his wife Monika, age 30, Joseph age 29. All were listed as butchers with Ohio as the destination.
Also Jakob Flury and M Alleman I believe lived in Olmsted Falls where he was the town blacksmith and their first constable.
Again, input that is appreciated. Do you have any links/sources for the data?
Jakob and his wife lived on the lower west side of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a butcher by trade. He came from Solothurn. He had three sons – John, William, and George. The three operated the Flury Brothers Meat Packing House. Jacob was born in 1830 and died in 1872. He is buried at St Mary’s Cemetery in Cleveland.
Appreciate the additionasl information. Never know when it might be really informative for someone researching that particular line.
Jakob Flury immigrated aboard ship Troy having departed Antwerp arrived in NY 29 May 1857. He was accompanied by his wife Monika (Hermonika) Oeschger.
Hi, Jerry … can you give a brief synopsis of Jakob Flury’s life either before and/or after his arrival in the U.S. in 1857?
